Normin Festival Management Confab Held In Oro

            More than 100 festival organizers and tourism stakeholders in Northern Mindanao gathered in Cagayan de Oro City today for a three-day  seminar-workshop on festival management.

            Dubbed as the 6th Seminar-Workshop on “Tunay Na Pyestang Pinoy”, the seminar workshop brings to the fore, tourism officers, artists, festival organizers and choreographers, students and other stakeholders to discuss vital issues confronting the holding of festivals in the region.               Dir. Catalino E. Chan, III, regional director of the Dept. of Tourism-10 disclosed during the opening program of the 3-day activity that the holding of the seminar workshop aims to address three crucial concerns along the promotion of the region’s cultural heritage as manifested in festivals.               Dir. Chan explained that the workshop hopes to correct what cultural gurus brand as “bastardization” of the local culture as evident in inappropriate dance movements, choreography including the design of costumes and props in the local festivals held all over the region.               “We need to correct this festival bastardization as this may eventually lose our distinct and authentic cultural identity in the region.,” Dir. Chan said.               The DOT, which initiated the seminar-workshop hoped to emphasize love and pride among the Northern Mindanao peoples, of their unique and distinctive cultural identities.               Dir. Chan added that with the sharing of    ideas that will take place during the three-day activity,  the Dept. of Tourism-10 also hoped to come up with a regional festival that will be reflective of all cultures that make up the Northern Mindanao.               The seminar-workshop on festival management, held today until April 12, is participated in by representatives from the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Tangub, Ozamiz, Oroqueita, Gingoog, Malaybalay and Iligan and the provinces of Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, Lanao del Norte and Misamis Occidental.               Academic institutions such as Xavier University, Lourdes College, Capitol University, Cagayan de Oro College, Liceo de Cagayan University, Mindanao Polytechnic State College, Pilgrim Christian College, Cagayan de Oro National High School, and Lapasan National High School also attended the seminar-workshop.
