Public School Teams Flex Muscles Vs Rivals

Basketball teams from public schools in Cagayan de Oro City are now playing at par in terms of level in competitiveness against powerhouse teams from private schools in the city.

This was proven during the grand opening of the 2nd Mayor Tinnex Jaraula Basketball Cup held over the weekend at the barangay Nazareth gym that drew a total 25 participating teams from public and private schools seeing action in the elementary, high school and college levels. In the high school inaugural games, Cagayan de Oro College-Phinma (COC) prevailed over the hard-fighting Indahag National High School , 54-49, in the first game while the rejuvenated Cagayan de Oro City High School walloped Southern Philippines College (SPC), 50-38, in the second game. Misamis Oriental General Comprehensive High School (MOGCHS) showed that they are a tough nut to crack team after scoring a big win over title-favorite Liceo de Cagayan University (LDCU) via a 54-49 double overtime victory in the thrilling main game.    During the opening ceremonies, sports enthusiast and Secretary to the Mayor Rogelio “Jigs” Jaraula, who represented Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula, stressed that the tournament aims to discover new potential talents from public and private schools who will bring Cagayan de Oro City’s pride and honor in local and national basketball competitions. “With the growing number of schools participating in this year’s edition, I am optimistic that the level of competitiveness will raise to a higher level, thus, brings more excitement and fun to our spectators,” said Jaraula, who is the regional director of the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) in Region 10. The tournament will also provide an opportunity and exposure for teams from public schools to strut their wares against well-trained private school teams in a high-level basketball competition like the Mayor’s Cup, he added. In the college level, defending champion Capitol University will face stiff challenge from opposing teams of Liceo de Cagayan University, Cagayan de Oro College, Southern Philippines College and Asian Business Cooperative Academy in retaining their title. Bannering the high school level is defending champion Sacred Heart of Jesus Montessori School along with the participating teams from St. Mary’s Academy, Pilgrim Christian College, Oro Christian Grace School, St. Mary’s School, Macabalan National High School,  The Fisher Vallley Academy, Liceo de Cagayan University, MOGCHS, Lapasan National High School, Cagayan de Oro College, Angeles Sisters National High School-Consolacion National High School, City High School, Indahag National High School, Southern Philippines College and Gusa National High School. In the elementary level, seeing action are teams from City Central School , Sacred Heart of Jesus Montessori School and Liceo de Cagayan University.
