by Ian A. Fuentes/city Information OfficeThe aging fleet of fire trucks of the Cagayan de Oro City Fire Station is expected to get a boost with the arrival of five units of fire trucks donated by the City Government of Tainan City, Taiwan, the sister city of Cagayan de Oro.
This developed after Tainan City Mayor Tain-Tsair Hsu recently sent a fax message to City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula confirming the delivery of the five fire trucks to Cagayan de Oro City "as soon as possible". "To strengthen the friendship between two sister cities and to help your Fire Department improve public security, I expect that we can start bilateral cooperation again, delivering these five fire trucks to your city as soon as possible", Mayor Tsu said in his letter to Mayor Jaraula. Mayor Jaraula said the addition of the five second-hand, but in good condition fire trucks, will surely improve the firefighting capabilities of the City Fire Department, thus ensuring quick response to public calls in times of fire incidents and other emergency cases. The fire truck donation from the City Government of Tainan was committed by Mayor Tsu when a delegation from Tainan City visited Cagayan de Oro in early April this year as part of the sisterhood agreement between the two cities. It can be recalled that Mayor Jaraula sent to Tainan City last month a tiny city government delegation, led by City Fire Marshal Benigno Amomonpon Jr., purposely to confer with Mayor Tsu on the matter. Mayor Tsu assured that the Tainan City Government will pay the freight of carrying the fire trucks from Tainan to Manila , with the Tainan Chamber of Commerce sponsoring most of the freight. City Councilor Ming-De Zhou, who is also the chairman of the Chamber of Commerce, and Xing-Yuan Chen, captain of the Volunteer Fire Fighting Headquarter, will pay the rest of the freight, Mayor Tsu added. Mayor Tsu however explained that the tariff of the trucks in Manila Port , custom clearance and cost for carrying the trucks from Manila to Cagayan de Oro will be shouldered by the city government of Cagayan de Oro. Once the units arrive in Manila Port , City Information Officer Erwin B. Culanag suggested to Mayor Jaraula to send a team of drivers who will fetch the fire trucks by land through roll-on roll-off (RoRo) routes in order to save shipping expenses.
