by Lorebeth C. Requiroso/city Council OfficeOn transfer of golf tournament from Cdeo to Bcd
LEGISLATORS this morning called on the management of Philippine Airlines to reconsider its decision to transfer the upcoming PAL international golf tournament from Cagayan de Oro City to Bacolod City.Councilor Ramon Tabor, chair of the City Council committee on commerce and trade, who authored the resolution, said the decision was “unfair”, even as he expressed concern that it will negatively affect the image of the city.He said the preparations to host the international tournament, which will bring golfers from different places of the country and the world to the city, had been in place, but on account of the Maguindanao incident, the PAL management decided to change the venue of the tournament, which is slated on Feb. 15, 2010. “The incident has cast doubt on the image of the city,” he added. While condemning the Maguindanao carnage, Councilor Tabor clarified that the tragedy was political and not iideological and terrorism-related.The councilor lamented that the organizers did not hold any consultation with concerned agencies on the security of the city before coming up with the decision. He said the Philippine National Police would have assured them of the safety of the delegates of the tournament. Acting upon the recommendation of Councilor Ian Mark Nacaya, chair of the committee on police, the resolution indicates the city government ‘s intervention and support to the holding of the international golf tournament in the city. He said details of the security plan can be provided to the organizer. Legislators are seeking the help of Senators Miguel Zubiri, Aquilino Pimentel and Representatives Rufus Rodriguez and Rolando Uy of the first and second districts to persuade the PAL management to proceed with initial plans to hold the tournament in the city.
