ABOUT 14,000 kilograms of medical waste are produced in Cagayan de Oro City and City Hall should do something to address this concern, said Councilor Roger Abaday during Monday afternoon’s (May 25) regular session of the 21st City Council.
In his special report, Abaday said Cagayan de Oro City serves not only its residents but also patients from nearby towns of Misamis Oriental province and Lanao provinces.
The city has four public hospitals, nine private hospitals, 37 laboratories and diagnostic clinics, and six hemodialysis facilities which generate an estimated 14 metric tons, or 14,000 kilograms, of medical waste every day, Abaday said.
Records show that the hazardous and medical waste treatment facility at the Pagalungan Sanitary Landfill has long been constructed but remains non-operational due to unresolved power infrastructure concerns.
Abaday proposed that this issue be addressed by the committees on environment and health who will invite officials of the Department of Health (DOH), City Health Office (CHO), government and private hospitals, medical administrators, and other stakeholders to share their input on the problem.
