GLIMPSE FROM THE PAST: CAGAYAN LIBERATED

The Battle for Cagayan, Misamis Oriental started on May 9 to May 12, 1945 under the Victor-V operations. Guerrilla forces from the 109th and 120th Infantry Regiment conducted an offensive against 650 Japanese along Barangay Iponan at 09:06H At 11:00H 1st battalion under 109th IR captured the Patag Airstrip (Camp Evangelista) forcing the Japanese to withdraw to Brgy. Carmen.
 
On May 12th, at 9:30H, the 109th IR was ordered to occupy Cagayan. The three battalions were able to occupy Julao-julao (Consolacion), a Japanese made bridge along Burgos-Yacapin St., and the damaged Cagayan Bridge (Ysalina Bridge). The 109th IR were able to establish a defensive perimeter outside of the town. After mopping up operations in nearby areas, Cagayan was declared free of enemy occupants.
