BALABA APPEALS FOR SUPPORT TO BULUA POTTERY INDUSTRY

Written by MDS
THE 21st City Council called for the allocation of public space for the display and sale of pottery products produced by Barangay Bulua’s pottery makers in its regular Monday afternoon (Sept. 15) session.

In her special report Councilor Joyleen Mercedes L. Balaba pushed for this proposal saying Bulua’s pottery industry is slowly dying out due to the displacement of potters from their display areas along Bulua highway.

The display areas for stoneware pottery pieces had long been considered a local landmark and Bulua is recognized for its durable and high-quality ceramics since it established its stoneware pottery in 1994.

Councilor Balaba, who chairs the council’s tourism committee, said City Hall should lead efforts to preserve, revitalize and revive the local pottery industry which is now part of the city’s cultural heritage.

Councilors Al P. Legaspi Sr. and Desiree Ann M. Dahino supported Balaba’s call with Councilor Legaspi proposing to designate an area in the westbound terminal for pottery display and to acquire land with red clay deposits.

Councilor Dahino suggested integrating pottery-making into the local curriculum to inspire more students to sustain the craft. (MDS/CIO)
