2008-04-09Mayor Jaraula Led Launching Of Housing Project For PWD
by Ian A. Fuentes/ City Information Office City Mayor Constantino G. Jaraula led the formal launching of the “Building Homes for the Disabled”, a housing project that will benefit 30 families of persons with disability (PWD’s) in Cagayan de Oro City.
During the housing project’s launching ceremony recently held at the city government’s 63-hectare relocation site in sitio Calaanan, barangay Canitoan, Mayor Jaraula thanked the organizers and donors for providing attention to the shelter needs of the disabled members of the community. Mayor Jaraula said that the project not only address the housing needs of the PWD community, but also helps in building a community where the beneficiaries could take pride on their sense of belongingness to their own community. No less than 30 duplex-type, 60-square meter, specially-designed housing units are now undergoing construction at the Phase 2 of the city’s relocation site. During the affair, Mayor Jaraula surprisingly announced that another civic-oriented group- the Philippine Council of Evangelical Churches under Rev. Al chiong, has pledged to build another 30 housing units in response to the program’s call for donations from groups and individuals for the building of additional houses. The “Building Homes for the Disabled” is financially assisted by the global partnership of Lions Club International Foundation and Habitat for Humanity International, with the support and assistance of the Cagayan de Oro Lions Club and Oro Habitat for Humanity as local partners. Organizers and stakeholders started three years ago the groundwork and leg working for the implementation of the housing project, and finally realized after group and individual donors raised an amount of US$ 46,909 for the construction of 30 housing units. Joining Mayor Jaraula during the launching ceremony were Engr. Jose P. Gatus, Oro Habitat for Humanity, Inc. president; Felix Ratunil, Cagayan de Oro Council of Lions Club president; Dr. Enrique Ampo, Cagayan de Oro Federation of PWD Associations president and Canitoan barangay chairperson Marlyn Lagumen.
