POTENTIAL TOURIST DRAW Klarex: Eco-park being studied as Chinatown site

Written by Stephen Capillas
The Cagayan de Oro City Eco-Park is being considered as a potential site for the Chinatown project that was raised during a visit by Chinese consultate officials from Davao City last Monday, Cagayan de Oro City Mayor Rolando ‘Klarex’ Uy said on Friday (Aug. 19).

‘I mentioned the Chinatown project to the visiting Chinese officials because I see it as a potential tourist attraction not only for our city residents but for our neighbors (in Misamis Oriental and northern Mindanao). I also want to promote local appreciation of Chinese culture (as a way to promote stronger ties with China),’ Mayor Klarex said in Visayan during his ‘Inyong Alagad: Mayor Klarex’ program at Magnum Radyo.

The 17-hectare Cagayan de Oro City Eco-Park is situated in the old dumpsite at Upper Dagong, Barangay Carmen. Consul General Li Lin and Consul Charo Jianwei of the People’s Republic of China Davao City Consultate led a contingent that paid a courtesy visit to Mayor Klarex. Mayor Klarex pledged to support the local Chinese business community as part of his ‘Rise CdeO’ development agenda.

‘The officials asked for an area (for the proposed Chinatown project) and I offered a five-hectare site at the Eco-Park (for this purpose). A Chinatown project will also benefit nearby communities and I hope this will be visited and supported by our Kagay-anons,’ Mayor Klarex said in Visayan./Text by SC with Mayor Klarex photo by Isabelle Czarina Soriano of City Mayor’s Office and CIO file photo
